After a hard-fought win over Busoga United, BUL return to action with a trip to Kavumba recreation grounds this Tuesday to face Bright Stars.

It was all gloom the last time BUL hit the road but confidence remains high around the Eastern Giants after a bouyant display last Friday and they will be keen to use the home win as an opportunity to build momentum away from home .

Alex Isabirye’s men will take encouragement from the fact that they have lost just once in eight, and sitting in second on 17 points after recording five wins and two draws. A win in this fixture will see them close the gap at the top to one point.

For Bright Stars, there was a change in management at Kavumba as the club hooked up Asaph Mwebaze as the head coach, replacing Paul Kiwanuka.

Too many draws were a feature of his first five games in charge of the team before they lost two on the bounce but their ship look to be steadying as they have won their last two matches, against Onduparaka and Express – a feat that leaves them sat 9th on the log.

Tuesday’s clash is set to be the 19th league meeting between the sides, but 20th altogether.

The manager confirmed Denis Mwemezi will miss the game due to injury but the house remains almost full with everyone ready to face the task at hand.

Alex Isabirye anticipates a challenging show from the hosts but sees his side marching away with all the three points at fulltime.

“They are in a good form. They won away to Express in their previous game, but we also want to win the game,” he said.

“This season we want to see that we don’t finish in the fourth place, so we shall try our best to get the three points.”

BUL have this term won one game, drawn two and lost one in four away matches.

MATCH REPORT: BUL 2-0 BUSOGA UNITED

Second half goals from Karim Ndugwa and Ibrahim Mugulusi were enough to give BUL a priceless 2-0 win over Busoga United on Friday, consolidating the Eastern Giants in the second place on the Uganda premier league log with 17 points.

Just as the second period looked to be running out, Ndugwa leapt to meet a beautifully weighted Ronald Otti cross from the left and head passed Michael Lutaaya in Busoga’s goal five minutes after the hour.

Following a goalless first half, Martin Aprem was introduced after the break and he got involved in the 76th-minute goal that sealed the result when he teed up Mugulusi who turned on his preferred left foot to curl the ball beyond Lutaaya’s reach.

The match started with a good momentum as attacks swung from end to end, but neither side possessed a cutting edge in the final third to make the breakthrough in the first half.

Busoga threatened as early as the second minute and almost scored when Dickson Niwamanya’s snapshot from range evaded everyone to sting the gloves of Emmanuel Kalyowa before the ball was cleared.

Four minutes later, BUL started to fire warning shots and their intent to win was made clear starting from the sixth minute going forward.

Pascal Ngobi was released in a shooting position by Ibrahim Kazindula near the area but his effort whistled slightly above the bar before the latter was denied from a free kick by the opponent’s goalkeeper.

Laban Tibita was Busoga’s brightest spark in the middle and the young man showed his talent as he picked up balls from their defense to his attackers quite often throughout the game.

However they struggled to beat Kalyowa in BUL’s goal as Nicholas Mwere’s carpet sweeping free kick was tamed before the lanky defender had another shot direct at the goalkeeper following a burst through on the left.

Their best chance of the game arrived after 57 minutes when Tibita engineered a quick, well-executed counter through Niwamanya that left Moses Logono one-on-one with Kalyowa inside the area, but Logono took too many touches before he slagishly put a harmless effort at the goalkeeper.

They paid for their wasted chances in 65th minute when BUL opened the scoring. Otti had all the time and space to weigh up his options, and he went for the head of Ndugwa who made no mistake to glide in a sweet header for his fifth goal of the season.

Substitute Aprem made his presence felt with an assist, picking up Mugulusi who opened his account this season with a cool and lovely finish with fourteen minutes left on the clock.

The result has stretched BUL’s unbeaten run at home to 11 league games since February, and the next league engagement will be away to Bright Stars next week at Kavumba recreation grounds on Tuesday.

BUL are back at the Fufa Technical Center for the fourth home game as Alex Isabirye’s side prepares to face Busoga United in our latest Jinja derby challenge. Last time out, both sides lost 1-0 to Express individually with Allan Kayiwa scoring for the Red Eagles in all the contests.

And after the defeat, BUL now turn the attention to Friday’s clash, where Isabirye will be looking to get the better of his former club, who he managed in 2016/17 season.

It was a one all draw on the sides’ last face off but this match has found them in contrasting form.

Going back to early February, BUL are unbeaten in their last ten home games in the Uganda premier league, and they will be looking to continue their impressive performances.

With four wins and two draws from seven rounds, and sitting second on 14 points, just four behind leaders Wakiso Giants who have played two games more, tells how colorful the Eastern Giants are – this term.

Busoga United are only dreaming of winning their third game this season after registering six losses from eight.

Three points is all they can show because they were recently docked three points and three goals from their tally, leaving them second from the bottom.

Therefore, their need for wanting to win could be over their heads but in BUL, they meet a side seeking to return to winning ways. This will be the 14th meeting.

BUL will have defender – Walter Ochora return from suspension, and this makes the squad full house with everyone available for selection.

Team manager Alex Isabirye spoke about the need to return to winning ways and the unease that came along with leading the pack, ahead of the game.

“This is going to be a difficult game but we want to win and I believe we shall win,” he said.

“We are going to give our level best not because we want to go back to the top of the table but because we need to get the three points.”

“There was some pressure when we were on top because many players didn’t know how to behave while there.”

“But we have got some experience and if we go top again, I think we now know what to do and I believe they will manage the pressure this time.”

Captain George Kasonko warned not to undermine harm that Busoga can cause and promised to get the job well done.

“This is the game that takes us back to the summit and if we are to achieve something, we have to win tomorrow’s game,” he said.

“Although Busoga is down on the table, this doesn’t mean they’re weak but we are prepared for them.”

“They’re my former employers but I am now at BUL, it’s where I get what I eat and a job is a job. I am going to do my job.”

ISABIRYE, WANDYAKA OCTOBER’S BEST

BUL’s manager Alex Isabirye and forward Richard Wandyaka were named as the pilsner coach and player of the month of October respectively at Kati Kati Restaurant on Wednesday.

Isabirye guided the Eastern Giants to three wins and two draws last month, scoring 11 goals and conceding only three in the process. BUL beat Blacks Power, UPDF and SC Villa and drew against URA and Gaddafi FC as the Eastern Giants collected 11 points out of a possible 15.

He beat competition from SC Villa’s Jackson Magera and Maroons’ Senfuma Mohammed to win the accolade, and he becomes BUL’s first coach in history to win the award.

Wandyaka scored four goals and made two assists in a fabulous start to the season.

The forward hit a double in our season’s opener against Blacks Power, netted and assisted also as we beat UPDF 3-1, his second assist came against URA before he volleyed in a winner at SC Villa as BUL remained unbeaten.

Such an eye catching performance was enough for him to shine brighter than his teammate – Karim Ndugwa and Maroons striker Fred Amaku in the contest for the award.

I thank God and everyone who has been part of this success and i promise to bring more, Wandyaka said after being announced winner.

He becomes the second player at BUL to win the accolade after Simon Peter Oketch winning the one for the month of March this year.

BUL are on top of the league standings after seven games with 14points. We host Busoga United on Friday November 25 on our next league action.

MATCH REPORT: EXPRESS 1-0 BUL

BUL fell to a 1-0 defeat to Express in a Uganda premier league action on Tuesday evening, but despite the loss, the Eastern Giants remained top of the pack with 14 points after seven rounds.

Allan Kayiwa’s goal just after eleven minutes was enough to separate the two sides in what turned out to be a frustrating evening at Wankulukuku.

Alex Isabirye’s side had some chances in the first half to restore parity with the Eastern Giants going close twice through Ibrahim Kazindula’s corners.

Martin Aprem was immediately thrown into the fray to provide spark to the team, replacing Ivan Wani four minutes after the half hour.

But after the interval, it was the hosts who almost doubled their advantage on 58 minutes when Daniel Shabena hit the post.

BUL then went on the front foot as the search for a goal intensified especially after the introduction of Ibrahim Mugulusi, Frank Kalanda, Ibrahim Nsimbe and Aggrey Madoi.

The Eastern Giants pressed and pressed and pressed for an equaliser but despite consistently getting into dangerous areas, the Red Eagles held on for the win.

Our next league task will be against Busoga United at FUFA technical center Njeru on November 25.

Tuesday sees the table leaders BUL travel to Wankulukuku, with the Eastern Giants set to face Express.

BUL showed their class when they dug out a 1-0 victory against Onduparaka last week on Wednesday, while Express recorded an impressive 2-1 win over the same opponent at the end of last month in the sides’ last piece of action.

James Odoch’s men stopped our eight game unbeaten run the last time we met with a 2-1 beating last season – Raymond Walugembe and Martin Kizza were on target for the home side in the first half, while Simon Peter Oketch scored a consolation for BUL as the game wore on.

Impressively, the Eastern Giants have won four and drawn two of their six league games this season to collect 14 points, and they will similarly bring an eight-game unbeaten run in the league again into this contest, which includes away victory at Blacks Power and one all draws at URA and Gaddafi this campaign.

Indeed, Alex Isabirye’s side thrashed Blacks Power 5-0 in front of their own faithfuls at the start of the season before sharing points with the tax collectors and the Soldier Boys.

However, BUL’s last win against the Red Eagles at Wankulukuku occurred six years ago.

Milton Kalisa scored inside 28 minutes as BUL registered a 1-0 victory, the first under coach Frank ‘Video’ Anyau who had replaced Alex Isabirye in September 2016.

This match has come at a time when the Red Eagles have won their last three league battles against BUL, and since losing to SC Villa, they responded well with a hard fought draw at Gaddafi and improved their performances later with a 2-1 win at Onduparaka.

This has left them in the 7th place with eight points from five rounds of play.

Tuesday’s match is the 19th clash between the sides.

Isabirye will have to do without the services of Denis Mwemezi who sustained an injury against Onduparaka, while defender Walter Ochora continues to sit out because of suspension. The rest of the players are in full good mood and shape to hit the ground running.

Two fairly good sides face off in a potential fascinating affair and the assistant coach – James Magala shared his thoughts about the game before the showdown.

“We’re going to be very focused,” he said.

“Express will not be a walk in the park though and I expect them to be very ready for us.“

“Nevertheless, we have readied ourselves well and we plan to have a good approach to the game technically.”

“They are a good team, we respect them and I know the game will be technically good altogether but our approach will be a bit different.”

“Our preparations have been good – we had international matches, and I know our players are now mentally strong.”

Striker Frank Kalanda was also optimistic ahead of the tie.

“We have prepared ourselves – right from the goalkeeping to the striking areas. Express is a very big team but we are very eager to maintain our top position,” he said

MATCH REPORT: BUL FC 1-0 Onduparaka FC

BUL got back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at Onduparaka on Wednesday.

Karim Ndugwa’s goal nine minutes from time ensured the Eastern Giants returned to winning ways after a one all draw last week at Gaddafi.

The forward’s fourth goal in six matches proved to be the only strike in the game as BUL consolidated themselves in top spot with 14 points.

In what was an even contest at FUFA Technical Center, it was that one moment of being in the right place at the right time which handed BUL the victory.

Substitute Ivan Wani was fouled near the box , and dusted off himself to deliver a perfect free kick from close range which Ndugwa tucked in with a header to give BUL FC the lead.

Onduparaka got the first chance in the game and they should have gone Infront as early as the 9th minute had they been clinical enough.

Rashid Yakin got at the end of a lofted pass into the box but his attempt missed the target.

At the other end, fleet footed Martin Aprem was causing havoc in the visitors area as he eluded everyone before he was floored in the box, however, the referee was not interested in the penalty claims with just fifteen minutes played.

Shortly to the half hour mark, BUL again went close when Richard Wandyaka was released in the dangerous area only for his effort to be cleared by Yakin.

On the 29th minute, our junior team graduate – James Jarieko, donning Onduparaka’s shirt number 29, danced on the right and found his way through, spun to his right, and away from Douglas Muganga but curled the ball slightly beyond the goal post before Emmanuel Kalyowa stopped Amos Muwonge’s header with a routine catch.

Alex Isabirye responded by sending on Denis Mwemezi and Ibrahim Mugulusi after the break and the changes served to spark us into control although the former was stretched off just eleven minutes after his introduction with an injury.

He was replaced by Ivan Wani and soon afterwards, Mugulusi stung the hands of Mathias Muwanga in Onduparaka’s goal with hard shot from a free kick as we dominated possession.

The deadlock was then broken on the 81st minute when Ndugwa powered a header off a free kick from 25 yards beyond the Carterpillars goalkeeper to spark celebrations amongst the BUL FC diehards.

With time quickly fading away, Isabirye made a tactical switch to his side, sending on Benon Tahomera in place of Mugulusi to contain the Carterpillars who were flying allover.

The Eastern Giants managed the final stages of the game well and eventually managed to secure their fourth win of the season in six matches.

BUL will again be in action on Tuesday next week against Express at Wankulukuku.

BUL prepare for their third home fixture this season as Onduparaka travel to Fufa Technical Center for the Uganda premier league action on Wednesday.

The Eastern Giants have had a good season so far, currently sitting healthily in first place on 11 points, after winning three and drawing two games.

Last week’s 1-1 draw at Gaddafi made it two stalemates in five matches and coach Alex Isabirye is well aware that the draws in that run should not be rampant and they need to start being turned into victories.

However, they will take encouragement from the fact that they have won all their home matches, scoring four and conceding two only in two home matches.

Onduparaka are currently in 15th position in the table, and come into this one in relatively down form, drawing three times and losing their last outing 2-1 at home to Express.

Hamuza Kalanzi’s men have one point reflecting on their account although they have picked up three this campaign in four games but the two were deducted from them as a repremand for having initiated chaos against KCCA in Arua last season.

Isabirye’s side will be without Walter Ochora due to suspension after the defender received a red card against Gaddafi, with his defense partner Ronald Otti also doubtful.

Midfielder Ibrahim Mugulusi remain sidelined through injury, and forward Frank Kalanda has joined him in the sick bay.

The rest of the players are expected to be available for selection.

Coach Alex Isabirye spoke about the game and the importance of a win against Onduparaka:

“We drew in our last game and now we need to get a win tomorrow to remain at the top but this will not be quite easy. Onduparaka has gone three games without victory and we expect them to come all out to get a better result. Nevertheless, we are ready for them,” he said.

Ibrahim Kazindula also spoke about the game and expressed confidence in getting back to the winning ways.

“After losing points in our last game, we have been prepared well and we think this is the right time to get back to the winning ways. We drew with Onduparaka the last time we met but this time we are more ambitious to get all the three points,” he said.

MATCH REPORT: GADDAFI FC 1-1 BUL FC

Hard nosed BUL picked up a vital point to remain top of the Uganda premier league pack following a one all draw at Gaddafi.

Ibrahim Kazindula’s first-half goal was cancelled out in the second half as we had to settle for a stalemate at Kakindu.

The midfielder scored his first goal of the season from the spot, sending Joel Mutakubwa in Gaddafi’s goal the wrong way to give us a deserved early lead.

The Eastern Giants failed to build on the advantage though, and the home side forced the game even through a Bakali Magumba goal after the break.

Isabirye’s men started well, playing with the confidence of a side coming into the fixture as a pace setter in the league.

And as early as the 12th minute, Emmanuel Obua swerved in a tempting cross from the left to force a hand ball from Shafik Bakaki, and the referee pointed to the spot.

Kazindula stepped up and powered a low shot past Mutakubwa, which was the club’s 11th league goal in five matches this season.

Moments later, the hosts missed a chance to equalize when Andrew Wasswa’s lob from a free kick was tipped over the bar by Emmanuel Kalyowa after Ronald Otti fouled Alex Kitata at the edge of the area.

BUL kept up the intensity and Kazindula’s shot clipped the post and slowly rolled out.

Following our hard fought 1-0 win over SC Villa last Friday, we now move across the City for the first Jinja derby this term against locals – Gaddafi at Kakindu.

The Eastern Giants have three wins from four going into the clash and currently boss the league standings with 10 points.

With ten goals scored, the Eastern Giants boast the best attack so far after four matches.

Recent form has seen Alex Isabirye’s side thrash Blacks Power and UPDF, as well as beating the Jogoos and drawing at URA. Victory at Kakindu will give them the fourth win and extend their unbeaten run to five – a record not achieved before by BUL at the start of a new season.

As for their previous trip to Gaddafi, that came in April 2022, Hillary Onek and Jerome Kirya scored as the Eastern Giants came out 2-0 winners at Gaddafi Arena.

The Soldier Boys are 12th on the table ahead of the tie following two draws and a defeat at SC Villa.

They came from behind through Brian Kalumba to draw 1-1 away to Express last time out after Ibrahim Kayiwa had put the Red Eagles in the lead, but their fighting spirit will be put to the test once again when they face the unforgiving BUL.

“But we are not on top by chance, it’s by hard work. we think day and night, and put in a lot of efforts to bring a difference in what we do.“

“Many people term this match as a derby and I concur with them because we share the same fans and we hail from the same area but this match is just like any other, so, our approach will not be any different.”

Ronald Otti:

“Our preparations have not been bad, and we have been put in the right shape to take on Gaddafi. Everyone should expect us to win because we are not leading the table by mistake, but because we are winning our games.”
