MATCH PREVIEW; BUL VS KCCA

Saturday 13th April 2024

Uganda Cup Quarter Finals

FUFA Technical Centre

BUL FC Vs KCCA FC

Kick-off: 3pm.

Nicholas Mwere in action

BUL FC welcome KCCA FC to the FUFA technical centre on Saturday afternoon in the Stanbic Uganda Cup quarter finals, with both sides entering the game following convincing wins almost a week ago.

The Eastern Giants who had not won in four outings beat Wakiso Giants 3-0 to get back to winning ways last Saturday.

The victory gave Abbey Kikomeko’s men a life line in the title chase and this cup competition provides a double front on which to fight for a silverware this season.

BUL made it to this stage with three super wins against Simba FC (3-0), Kyambura Rastas (1-0) and Express (4-1 on penalties).

KCCA FC reached the quarter finals thanks to wins over Admin/Bugisu United (2-0), Jinja North United (2-0) and URA FC (1-0) and is yet to concede a goal in the competition.

Both sides exited the cup at this level last season but this time one will have a chance to play in the semi finals.

BUL have already enjoyed success over KCCA this season, beating them 1-0 at FUFA technical centre in September last year before they mustered a goalless draw in February at Lugogo.

But the visitors have recorded five wins in a row from their last five matches, keeping three clean sheets.

The coach confirmed the club has a clean bill of health and has no single suspension to contend with.

His remarks;

We played KCCA twice in the league, we won them 1-0 here and then played out a 0-0 draw at Lugogo. But we are now playing them in the Uganda Cup which is a totally different competition,” Abbey Kikomeko said.

All I know is they’re going to come full force, wanting to qualify for the next level.”

But we also want to qualify for the semi finals. We lost at the quarter finals last season. This time we want to perform better and if possible, we March up to the finals or even win the trophy.”

Our target for this edition is nothing short of the trophy. Whatever competition we play in and it has a trophy, it ultimately becomes our target.

Captain George Kasonko said;

There are no second chances at this level of the competition. We should handle each game at a time and this moment we are focusing on the game with KCCA.”

If we are to meet some of the goals for the club this season , we should win it.

So we are not just going to play KCCA, but we are looking at beating them.”

Manager Alex Isabirye speaking to players during training

BUL Football Club set up a date with Vipers SC for Sunday’s Stanbic Uganda Cup final after knocking out Express on Thursday afternoon.

The Eastern Giants will be playing their first major final in history and they are keen to win the cup.

While addressing members of the sports media during FUFA’s special press conference at their headquarters on Friday morning, Alex Isabirye is confident his guard will complete the task at hand.

Manager Alex Isabirye said; “My team is very ready waiting to play the final,” .

“I have confidence in my players; we shall win the trophy.”

The team has only two days to rest as well as working out a plan to defang the opponents but Isabirye has discarded fears of fatigue and promised nothing short of victory.

“My opponent has had enough time to rest and even monitor our team play but that will not worry me at all.”

“Finals are won not played, so we are going to win the game on Sunday.”

“If we can beat the regional champion Express FC, what about tiring Vipers!” Isabirye wondered

The Eastern Giants camp has been beefed up by the return of team captain Walter Ochora and forward Hamis Tibita.

Endowed Simon Peter Oketch and anchorman Richard Wandyaka will also join the fight on Sunday after sitting out of the Thursday fixture due to suspension.

Akol among the senior players to feature

Team News:

In terms of team news, most players who were instrumental in the team’s fantastic run in this competition were released at the end of last season.

However, team manager Alex Isabirye will assemble the appropriate players available  and plan accordingly for the big occasion.

“About 70% of the players who played for us last season were released, not because they were not good but because some were out of contract while some had unlikeable characters,” Isabirye said after the last training.

“We are supposed to use players that have licenses for last season, therefore, we have no chance to deploy our new players. We shall now use a mix of young players from the junior team and a few seniors available, ” he revealed.

The team will be dominated by juveniles with little experience of topflight football but Isabirye is confident his lads will deliver.

“We are going to face a good team with a good set of coaches. They are the league champions, recently won CECAFA Kagame Cup, and they have been playing at the continent.”

“However, my young players are eager to play. They will put up a good show and I believe we shall win the game.”

Form Guide

The Eastern Giants head into this one on the back of four wins from our last five competitive fixtures in all competitions and we have lost only once in Uganda Cup, a 0-1 defeat to Proline in the second leg of the quarter finals. We extended our excellent form to preseason friendlies. BUL FC has won eight matches and lost two in twelve pre-season outings.

Meanwhile, Express have won five from seven matches in all competitions, but lost 0-1 to Al Merreikh in their immediate last game.
